What inspires me? Eli Sinkus – Editor at 522 Productions

A few weeks ago, we uploaded the initial video in our “What Inspires Me?” video series (developed by Chris Jurchak, Digital Art Director). Today, we’ve embedded Eli Sinkus’ inspirational video and rationale below. Eli is one of our Editors at 522. Let us know what you think.

When tasked with thinking about what inspires me, I immediately went back to my roots in photography. I often find myself inspired by the world around me, tender moments or beautiful early morning light. I have always been captivated by the concept of the “decisive moment,” a phrase coined by Henri Cartier-Bresson. This is the concept that in any scenario or situation, there is one moment that can sum up the emotion or essence of it all. This moment is where the photograph happens. If you miss it, then you miss it. As I was researching the decisive moment, I came across an interview that Cartier-Bresson gave to Cornell Capa in 1973. Inspired by his words, to write a short film; I thought his speech was the best depiction of my vision. I sliced, diced, chopped and twisted until Cartier-Bresson’s voice told my story.

This story is about a young man exploring and discovering the world through the lens of his camera. Discovering about life, death, beauty and love. Learning about when to take a photo and when to set the camera down and be a participant in this glorious thing called life. This was an exploration into photography, videography, writing, editing, and lighting- also a reflection on the wonders of life and nostalgia that comes along with growing up. I was definitely inspired making this and hope that I can inspire you as well.

Thanks so much to my wonderful actors Blair, Ella, Camille, Clark and Elliot for helping me bring this idea to life.

I saw(heard) this in high school as a film strip and LO with the little”beep” to advance the film. It was my inspiration to become a photographer. Bresson’s “Yes! Yes yes!” said it all. Thank you for the lovely interpretation. Now I’ll go make some more cheese.
