Simplicity: There are about a million ways to measure the value of a video. The number of seconds isn’t one of them. So sometimes, the best way to add to a video is to subtract from it. Figure out your story. Then, make sure every moment, every word, every sound pushes that story forward. Don’t let anything else get in the way.

Timing : Even after filming is completed, there are infinite possibilities for how a video could come together. It all comes down to timing: thousands of tiny decisions we make during the editing process that change the way your audience perceives a story. Subtle shifts in pacing could be the difference between a good video and a film that makes a visceral emotional connection with the audience. They may not know the difference, but they’ll feel it.

Engagement: “Why should I keep watching?” It’s a question that I’m constantly trying to answer throughout every video, and it starts with the first 10 seconds. I immerse viewers in the story by kicking off the piece with some of the best stuff — something intriguing, inspiring or informative that hints at what’s to come. I also save a few surprises that’ll pay off later on. The goal is to constantly reward the audience for staying engaged, and leave them feeling like it was time well spent.
