It is widely believed that foreign military intervention is central to protecting the United States’ domestic freedoms. Christopher Coyne and Abigail R. Hall- Mercatus scholars- examine the pattern they call the “boomerang effect”: emboldened by the relative weakness of governance abroad, the U.S. government is able to experiment with a larger range of social controls. These conditions, policies, technologies and tactics are then re-imported to America, ultimately changing the national landscape and increasing the extent to which citizens live in a police state.
The challenge with this project was taking an incredibly complex subject matter and make it not only digestible + visually appealing to the general public, but to simultaneously drive the viewer to learn more by purchasing Coyne and Hall’s new book “Tyranny Comes Home: The Domestic Fate of U.S. Militarism”.
The project had two deliverables, both with a unique look and feel. For the surveillance video, we focused on creating a scene that mirrors the surveillance state. Our speakers were filmed on green screen, and we were able to put them in a digital world as though filmed through a security camera. With edgy music, use of archival images, and smooth animated transitions, we were able to make a video that not only explained the Surveillance State, but transport the viewer inside it.
The second deliverable centered around the militarization of police. Militarization of the U.S. police was a process that happened slowly over time. We wanted to capture the historical thread of the subject matter and used animation and archival materials to develop a rich timeline of the events. A mixture of archival video footage, live action expert testimony, and custom animation takes the viewer on an informative and captivating journey through time.
These videos not only helped to promote Coyne and Hall’s book “Tyranny Comes Home”, but provided an educational resource and promoted the Mercatus Center Hayek Program for scholars to conduct and disseminate their research worldwide.
